    According to Bloomberg news on July 6, an insider from the US side revealed that the United States is putting pressure on the Dutch government to require ASML, the country‘s semiconductor manufacturer, to prohibit the export of mainstream technology required for the production of a large number of chips in the world to China. Bloomberg pointed out that the United States is using this to expand its action to curb the rise of China.

    According to the report, the restrictions imposed by Washington on the Netherlands will further expand the current restrictions on the sale of the most advanced equipment to China, which aims to prevent China from becoming the world‘s leading chip producer. If the Netherlands agrees with the US request, it will greatly expand the scope and categories of chip manufacturing equipment currently prohibited from being sold to China, which may affect Chinese chip manufacturers.

    People familiar with the matter told Bloomberg that U.S. officials were lobbying the Dutch government to ban ASML from selling some of its older deep ultraviolet lithography machines (DUV). These machines are a generation behind the most advanced technology, but they are still the most commonly used equipment for making some less advanced chips needed for cars, telephones, computers and even robots.

    People familiar with the matter said that this issue was raised during the visit of U.S. Deputy Secretary of Commerce don graves to the Netherlands and Belgium to discuss the supply chain issue from the end of May to the beginning of June. Because the discussion was conducted in private, these people familiar with the matter asked not to be named. During that visit, graves also visited ASML‘s headquarters in the Dutch city of felderhofen and met with Peter wennink, CEO of the company.

    Informed sources pointed out that the Dutch government has not yet agreed to impose any additional restrictions on ASML‘s exports to China, believing that if the measures required by the United States are implemented, the trade relations between the Netherlands and China may be damaged. At present, ASML has been unable to ship its most advanced extreme ultraviolet lithography machine (EUV) to China because it cannot obtain the export license from the Dutch government. The price of each equipment is about 160million euros.
